About ASEN

The Australian Student Environment Network is the network of student environment groups from around Australia committed to building grassroots movements for change. We link together 38 university environment collectives and five state networks around Australia. We organise for environmental and social justice through collective action on a range of critical ecological and social issues, and provide opportunities for young people to gain the skills, education and experience necessary to become lifelong change agents.

Through the network, you can get involved in campaigns with people all over Australia, taking action on environment issues such as putting a stop to irreversible climate change or breaking the deadly nuclear chain, work alongside Indigenous peoples in struggles for sovereignty or campaign to end CSG mining and coal exports.

We might live far apart, and have different skills and backgrounds, but we share common passions and commitments. Each environment collective chooses what they want to campaign for as a group; each individual chooses how they direct their energy and strengths.

ASEN works to be inclusive and aims explicitly to break down sexism, homophobia, racism, class and geographical barriers.

Structure of ASEN

ASEN is a network of local student environment collectives. Collectives are the building blocks and we are committed to the principles of collective organising. Individuals in the movement come together in collectives, these collectives come together in state networks, and they all come together in the national network: ASEN. Individual collectives have the autonomy to determine their own projects and internal procedures.

ASEN Events

Each year, runs an Activist Training Camp in January and the Students of Sustainability conference in July, which attracts 600-800 people. These events consist of workshops, inspiring talks, discussions, plenaries, planning sessions, actions, practical skill-sharing, networking, and hanging out with other enviro kids from all over the country.

Resources and Publications

ASEN publishes a biannual Zine called Germinate, regular newsletters and resources to help collectives run campaigns.
