The Sustainable Campus working group aims to help support clean energy, recycling and other campus based campaigns all over the continent. Universities are caches of power – they physically use a lot of energy, and can be model of a sustainable built complex. More importantly, research into energy is carried out at campuses, at the moment often funded by coal or nuclear industry, we want more renewable energy, research into innovative technologies, and research into new ways of organising our communities sustainably. Empowering students to demand that their universities switch to clean energy in their use and in their research. Students show have the right to have a part in decisions about what their university does, together we can get active and work towards a better future. The working group want to share resources, so that the many and diverse campaigns happening on campuses can share and learn form each other.
Reportback from the climate campaign stream at ASEN Training Camp.
January 2010.
During the four days of training camp we had three campaign planning sessions, and out of this time we produced a two-pronged climate campaign strategy for 2010 and beyond. Big shoutouts to Sam and Holly
from The Change Agency for their help facilitating our planning and for sharing their insight and knowledge.
With the vision of Australia getting its energy from community-owned renewable energy sources and ceasing to export fossil fuels, we’ll be focusing on expanding universities’ commitment to renewable energy
and mobilising students at 2010 climate camps. We committed to the vision by working on these objectives:
- By November 2010 relevant decision makers on every ASEN-affiliated campus commits to purchase 100% renewable energy by 2015
- 500 + ASEN activists attend Bayswater climate camp in late 2010
- 100 WASEN activists attend a WA climate camp in 2010
- CCEN mobilises student activists to a Victorian climate camp if possible
Coordinating the continent-wide efforts to get renewable energy on campus are Loki (Vic) and Sally (NSW), while Steve from QEAN, Gem from SEAN, Phil from WASEN and someone from CCEN will be working on phasing out coal by facilitating ASEN’s involvement in climate camp 2010.
