WHAT? ASEN Training Camp 2012
WHEN? 20-25th Januray 2012
WHERE? On Wiradjuri Country at Caloola Farm, ACT – http://goo.gl/jXhIL
Training camp is an annual event organised by members of the Australian Student Environment Network. The camp is intended to provide time and space for developing and extending our skills as activists and collective organisers, for making plans for the year to come, and for reflecting on and strengthening our network.
WORKSHOPS
There will be sessions on…
- collective organising skills, such as facilitation and how to build and maintain collectives
- exploring and developing our ideas about how change happens (theories of change, campaign strategy)
- sharing the successes and learnings from the diverse campaigns and actions that people from the network have been involved in
- state and collective break-out/planning sessions
- the future of ASEN
VENUE
Caloola Farm is an old sheep station amongst some hills on the out skirts of Canberra near Tharwa. It is set up as a conference centre, with a main hall with lots of bunk rooms along two walls and an industrial kitchen. There’s loads of space, some horses in the back paddock, a basketball court and a volley ball net. For driving directions please click here http://goo.gl/jXhIL.
ABORIGINAL TENT EMBASSY 40th ANNIVERSARY
Each year on the 26th January, Training Camp attendees travel from Caloola Farm to the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra to take part in the Invasion Day (Australia Day) March for Sovereignty. This year is the 40th Anniversary of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy, with a week long program of ceremonies, discussions and celebrations. One of the main reasons we hold Training Camp in Canberra is to provide support and solidarity to the Sovereignty Movement, so, if you can, plan to spend a little extra time after Training Camp in Canberra.
COST
$200 If you’re in the money and would like to cover costs as well as making a donation (solidarity price)
$150 includes bunk bed accommodation and all meals
$85 includes camping accommodation and all meals
Accommodation and Transport subsidies
We don’t want cost to prohibit anyone from participating in the network. If you can’t afford to pay, please use the registration form form to apply for a subsidy. All you need to do is shoot us an email with a short explanation of why you need a subsidy
Applying for Sponsorship
HERE is a letter that you can use to request sponsorship to attend the camp. We strongly encourage you to send these letters to the Head of your uni Department/Faculty, Head of your degree/program, any sympathetic lecturers, Student Union, local rotary club, local MPs and Local Council. The letter requests a sponsored amount of $200, and support in covering transport costs.
In previous years this has been a very successful way of securing funds by emailing and then following up with a phone call the next day to ask about it/answer any questions they might have. The phone call definitely is the clincher! There’s still time to ask. Give it a go.
We hope to pool the money gained through sponsorships to ensure that we can support students from all over Australia attending the camp, let us know if this is something you would be willing to be part of and we can support you in the process. Once you have sent in the letter, you can receive the funding either into your bank account or to ASEN’s – email info@asen.org.au for details.
