What is Mining The Truth?
The Mining the Truth Roadtrips began with a group of 12 members of our network’s NSW/ACT branch in 2011 who explored coal and gas communities in the Hunter Valley and the Liverpool Plains regions. Their purpose was to get out of the cities, witness the effects of industrial extraction firsthand and to learn from affected community members and groups trying to bring about social and environmental change. For many participants, the experience was life-changing. ASEN even made an award-winning 30 minute documentary tracking the conversations and experiences we had along the way. Just transitions away from fossil fuel-based economies is a powerful theme in the roadtrips.
The roadtrips have continued, with different state networks travelling to affected communities. In 2014, SEAN’s trip of NSW included chatting to the CFMEU and learning from Aunt Jenny Munro at the Redfern Aboriginal Tent Embassy, before heading out west to Bulga, Maules Creek, Muswellbrook and Gloucester. Check out our blog for reflections on the trip.
