The Climate Strategy Weekend (21&22 Feb)- this is what we talked about:

- We discussed the objectives and tactics that arose from the ASEN training camp and the People's Climate Action Summit in January - People were most excited to work on the objective to permanently stop or prevent the opening of a piece of coal infrastructure, new or existing, by 2010. - People wanted to work on climate projects coming out of SEAN to contribute to this objective - The projects people were most were excited to work on to contribute to this objective were: 1) banks and financial institutions stuff- looking at how banks and financial institutions support polluting projects eg new coal mines, and how to we stop the flow of capital? This was not discussed on the weekend but research is underway, exciting! Contact scarlet- scarlet.wilcock@gmail.com 2) Building alliances- with Traditional Owners, workers and community in coal affected communities. To achieve this a listening tour/s were proposed. It's possibly what you already know, or what your spidey-sense knows, but it's fun to watch :)...

the low-down

So, it's time for a little run-down of what's going on in sean right now! Whoo. It's o-week time, and I was at uts today and it was crazy. Crazy in a good way, i think. So GO, check the sean calendar for when all the uni o-weeks are to join the madness and fun. Some people in the network have been pretty interested in the campaign going on in Bulahdelah lately, concerning the RTA's determination to bulldoze through the beautiful Boolladilla Mountain to make six lanes of road, part of their giant east coast freeway upgrade. The mountain is full of sites sacred to the Worimi people and the campaign is being led by Uncle Worimi Dates with the support of local activist Adele Carrell and Bundjalung elder Uncle Robert Corowa. Yesterday a couple of us seanies went visiting and wandering up the mountain and it is shockingly gorgeous. Construction is due to start March/April. Be a part of the campaign....

Release Roxby EIS Now and provide 3 Month Consultation

Release Roxby EIS Now Greens MLC Mark Parnell has called on BHP Billiton to release the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the hundred year multi billion Olympic Dam expansion, after it was revealed that "the largest document ever printed in this state" which was "being printed as we speak" would not be released until May 1 for only an 8 week consultation period. "Although it has taken years to prepare, BHP Billiton and the SA Government expect interested South Australians to read and respond to the largest document ever printed in this state, describing a hundred year project with thousands of pages of detailed analysis, in just days," said Greens MLC Mark Parnell. "In fact, the SA public were given a longer time to have their say on changes to caravan park zoning, or a new shopping centre in Victor Harbor, than for the biggest development by far in South Australia's history," he said. According to BHP Billiton's website, the Olympic Dam expansion EIS public consultation period will be only 8 weeks. To put that into perspective,...
